One of my previous posts was about the decision for my husband to get Botox injections in his arm. You can go here to read that post.
We are now about a month out from getting the injections and I wanted to update you guys on his progress.
First of all, his muscles have definitely loosened. His arm hangs almost straight and it’s much easier to open his fingers – no more prying his hand open!
Sometimes when he is relaxing his hand is open on its own and that never happened before the Botox injections.
Why is all of this important? A few things have happened.
He was able to raise his arm up from his lap to about halfway up his chest – for the first time! Up to now, he has had no movement at all in his hand or arm.
Check it out:
He is able to bend his wrist a little, which he could not do before.
He is able to do more therapy/exercises now that he has some movement.
His disposition is much improved. He is feeling hopeful again and sees that he can still make progress (as of the writing of this post he is 7 1/2 months post stroke).
He will continue getting the injections every 3 months for a while. They are also going to do some injections in his leg for the muscle that controls his toes to see if they can help loosen those a little so that his toes lay flat (right now they are going a little to the side which makes walking uncomfortable sometimes).
If your spouse is suffering from spasticity issues, find out if Botox is an option.
