In the last post, I mentioned that Paul had a second swallow test and they said he was able to have regular liquids and mechanical cut food. What the heck is that????
Mechanical cut food basically means that his food comes to him already chopped up by a machine.
His food choices are also limited. For example, he can’t eat bread. He can’t have foods that aren’t easily mechanically cut or foods that might cause him to choke. For breakfast, he had pancakes and turkey sausage. He’s learning to eat with his left hand.
The upside is that he actually gets to eat food! On day 3 after his stroke, we are seeing some improvement. He is able to move his leg a little and could raise it up an inch or so off the bed. He still does not have any movement in his arm or hand.
On day 3 they started him on Zoloft. He is very emotional and it is very common to suffer depression after a stroke so they felt the Zoloft would help.
On day 4, Paul starts talking a little more and a little clearer. I wonder if he actually is speaking clearer or if I am just getting used to it and understanding him better. But either way, I’m not annoying him by always asking him to repeat what he said.
The physical therapist (PT) got him to stand up on Day 4. He took a few steps using a walker with the PT pushing his right leg forward for him.
After a week in the hospital, Paul was moved to an in-patient rehab facility. You can read about that experience here.
